Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: The Most Dangerous Ingredient in you Skin Care Products

By Healthy Darling · May 2nd, 2013

The other week I directed you to the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database to inform you of the toxic ingredients in your skin care products. If you were to try to avoid only one ingredient though, it should be Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Suflate. Acording to Dr. Frank Lipman these chemicals can combine to cause a deadly class of carcinogen. In addition to being in all our soaps, shampoos, and toothpastes, SLS is also used to clean engines, garage floors, and car washes- you don’t say!

In addition to a deadly carcinogen, SLS are known to cause eye damage, depression, diarrhea, and other ailments (2,935 reports in the Toxicology Data Network here).

YIKES! With SLS being the premiere foaming agent in all our hygiene products, what’s a well groomed citizen to do!? Fear not, brands are catching on to the SLS-Free trend and making new products accordingly. Below are my favorite, 5-heart items and solutions.

SHAMPOO:

I love love love Caviar Shampoo & Conditioner! It’s awesome and luxurious and free of all the bad stuff:

Features:

  • NO SULFATES, NO PARABENS, NO GLUTENS, NO TEA,
  • NO DEA, NO PABA, NO PARAFFIN, NO PHTHALATES,
  • NO PETROLATUM, NO MINERAL OIL, NO ANIMAL TESTING!

I’m also a big fan of Global Keratin with Juvexin which has that creamy salon scent that’s so yummy.

Features:
  • SLS, SLES and Sodium Chloride free
  • Gluten Free

TOOTHPASTE:

So I bet you’re running off to go get yourself some Tom’s of Maine- right!? Errr- don’t. Firstly, Tom’s was acquired by Colgate-Palmolive in 2006, so it’s not the hippy-dippy natural brand that you might think it is. Secondly, that great majority of their products use SLS. Boo. My FAVORITE toothpaste brand is JASON Toothpaste. They have a range of flavors from yummy and sweet to powerfully minty.
Features:
  • 3 natural whiteners whiten teeth without chemicals or harsh abrasives
  • Perilla Seed Extract helps block sugar acids that form tartar on teeth
  • No Fluoride, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Saccharin, Preservatives or Animal Testing

SOAPS:

Nearly all brands of fragrant, liquid soaps use SLS ((sigh)). For this reason, it’s generally safest to just buy yourself a gentle BAR of soap.
Otherwise, I adore Desert Essence Organics.
Features:
  • Vegan, Wheat, and Gluten Free
  • No Parabens, Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates, phosphates, phthalates, artificial fragrances, colors, silicones, EDTA, glycol or petroleum-based ingredients.

Finally, my dear friend Aude Marie makes a totally yummy and delicious, all natural body scrub here.

This would make such a great gift for the holidays!

I hope you found this post helpful! I always look forward to your feedback and questions, so if there’s anything I can do to help or advise, please let me know. :)

Great post Jenny! People don’t realize how many toxins are in our beauty products! I’m an Aveda addict myself :)

Thanks Leslie!! I appreciate Aveda as well, but since I’m allergic to Jojoba, I never get to use their products :P They also use a lot of wheat and barley in their products, which is no bueno for Gluten Free people. However, I agree- the brand in general is fabulous. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Aline! Thanks for commenting! Not sure if you saw what I wrote about Toms of Maine, but most of their toothpastes have SLS, so be sure to check the kind that you use! xoxo

Yes–sorry. I meant to say I scour the labels to make sure the Toms stuff is free of junk. I’m also a huge fan of Josie Maran products. Not just because she supports the organization I work for, but because she’s made the commitment to create products that are good for the environment and sans all the toxic junk found in a lot of items. I love your list and can’t wait to add it to my repertoire!

I’m really loving the theme/design of your blog. Do you ever run into any internet browser compatibility problems? A small number of my blog audience have complained about my website not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Opera. Do you have any solutions to help fix this problem? Cheers!

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my
4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.

She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely
off topic but I had to tell someone!
