According to The Week: “New York University researches analyzed the medical records of 11,500 young children and found that those who had received antibiotics before they were 6 months old were 22 percent more likely to be overweight by age 3 than those who hadn’t. The researcher also found that mice given antibiotics put on up to 15 percent more body fat than those who weren’t, and that the types of bacteria flourishing in their guts changed. Scientists are just beginning to understand how our gut bacteria affect our digestion, immune system, and even mental health.”
This article by Science Mag states that “Farmers have long used antibiotics to make cows, pigs, and turkeys gain weight faster. Now, scientists claim that receiving antibiotics early in life may also make children grow fat”- Eeg, yet another reason to buy Organic meats!!!
((Sigh))- as always, the safest strategy is to consume real food in its most natural state, free of growth hormones, chemicals, GMOs, pesticides, antibiotics etc. While I’m a huge proponent of science and modern medicine (it saved my brain!) our nation’s health has declined too rapidly in this proliferating landscape of processed junk for me to trust any food that’s not natural.
Nice post.
Jenni,
I am so happy to see your shift towards healthier food. I hope that you can explore one step further, and at least cover the health aspects of not eating any meat or animal products whatsoever. As it is a big leap from desserts made with white flour and white sugar to healthy eating with organically raised food (including meat), so it is another big leap to drop the meat, dairy and eggs altogether. And yet studies show, time and again, that the primary illnesses that are the top killers in the west are all diet related diseases. Heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, #1-3, I believe, can all be effectively cured with a vegan diet. It is something to seriously look at, and at least report on both sides of the story. Thanks very much!
Hi Raybo! Thanks so much for commenting! I totally respect and appreciate people who go vegan and vegetarian. As someone with Type 0 + blood, I really need meat for energy. I don’t even like red meat, to be honest, but I am never leaner and more energetic than when I eat it (grass fed, of course). I think diets need to be tailored to people’ bodies, which can take some trial and error. My ancestors in Northern Europe ate meat, had little vegetation during the winter months, and no cultivated grains. Thus, my body responds very well to this blue print. People from Southeast Asia however, might work much better with grains and tropical fruits. Again, I respect the many reasons people go vegetarian, and if I could, I would!
