In addition to increasing appetite, weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and dementia, we can now add Stupidity as another adverse result of consuming HFCS- “Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain’s ability to learn and remember information,” claims Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a professor of integrative biology and physiology in the UCLA College of Letters and Science. Conversely, omega-3 fatty acids can increase your brain’s functionality. In a study where two groups of rats were given fructose, the group that also consumed flaxseeds and DHA (omega-3 fatty acids) clearly out-performed the DHA-deprived group in mazes.
So the next time you cram for an important test, put the candy aside and opt for walnuts, salmon, or flaxseeds instead!
